Education system in the UK

Secondary Education in England, Wales and Northern Ireland

Schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland tend to emphasise depth in a few chosen subjects.
  • Year 7 to 11 (Year 8 - 12 in N. Ireland), typically for students aged 12 to 16.
  • Some secondary schools offer a non-compulsory sixth form department, Year 12 and 13
  • After the successful completion of Year 10 and 11 a General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) is awarded, usually in five to ten different subjects.

Secondary Education in Scotland

Scottish education tends to focus on more breadth across subjects than in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • Year 1 to 4, typically for students from the age of 12/13 to 15/16.
  • Scottish Qualification Certificate is awarded after successful completion of Standard - Grade courses taken during Secondary 3 and 4, usually in seven to nine subjects.
  • Optional upper secondary education: Secondary 5 and 6 is available, typically from the age of 16/17 to 17/18.

Post-16 Education in the UK

A-Levels (England, Wales, Northern Ireland)
The most common form of post-16 education is the study of A-levels (General Certificate of Education in Advanced Level certificates), which are used as a form of preparation for admission into university. Students generally study three or four subjects to A-level relevant to their chosen degree subject.
  • Year 12 and 13, commonly called Sixth Form, typically for students from the age of 16/17 to 17/18.
  • A-Levels can be studied at a secondary school, sixth form college or further education college.

Highers (Scotland)
Generally, students take Highers, a Scottish Qualification certificate offered by the Scottish Qualifications Authority, after Secondary 4. Highers are a university entrance qualification and are offered in a wide range of subjects. Though students can typically enter university at the end of Secondary 5, most remain through Secondary 6 to take more Highers courses or progress to the Advanced Highers level.
  • Secondary 5 and 6, typically for students from the age of 16/17 to 17/18.
  • Highers take place at secondary school.
  • Requires the completion of Standard Grade exams

Higher Education in the UK

Bachelor’s Degree (England, Wales, Northern Ireland)
Students apply to UK universities, through the University and College Admissions Service (UCAS), a central government agency that coordinates applications for every university. Students may make 5 choices on their UCAS form. Wide ranges of degree courses are available, which provide skills for a variety of jobs or further study.
  • A Bachelor’s degree is usually a 3 year program at a university or higher education college.
  • Universities evaluate students’ predicted A-level scores (or equivalent), among other criteria, during the admissions process
  • Students must choose course as part of the university application
  • Types of degrees include: Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BSc)
  • Some degree programs are for 4 years and include a ‘sandwich’ year when students gain relevant work experience for 1 year.
  • In countries where students have fewer than 13 years education, it is likely that students will need to study a year-long Foundation Certificate program before starting a Bachelor's degree.

Bachelor’s Degree (Scotland)
Wide ranges of degree courses are available at Scottish universities, which tend to emphasise breadth across subjects and students typically do not specialise subjects until the third year.
  • A Bachelor’s degree is a 4 year program at university.
  • During the admissions process universities evaluate the students’ Highers results among other criteria.
  • Students may take a sandwich course, a year of study abroad or work before courses are completed
  • Traditionally, Scottish universities award a Master of Arts (MA) degree, which is equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree
  • The Honours degree is awarded after an additional year of research at the university.

Master's Degree

A Master's degree in the UK may be research based, a taught course or a combination of the two and will prepare students for a particular career or for a doctorate qualification, and are offered in a variety of fields.
  • Requires the successful completion of an undergraduate degree.
  • Typically a 12 month program
  • Taught master's qualifications include: Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc) and Master of Business Administration (MBA)
  • Research master's qualifications include: Master of Research (MRes), Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

Doctorate

Doctorate programs require students to undertake an original piece of research.
  • Generally requires a Bachelor’s or Master's degree
  • Minimum length of three years at a university

International students

To study in the UK, international students whose English is not their first language must provide evidence of English language proficiency. Most universities in the UK prefer the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) certificate. IELTS 6.0+ is the usual level required for undergraduate study and IELTS 6.5+ for postgraduate.
In addition to proving English proficiency, international students must also check that their qualifications meet the school’s entry requirements, and UK NARIC provides information and advice on international qualifications. International Foundation Certificate courses are available for students that have not met required qualifications.
International students may be required to take a Pre-master’s program if their English language and study skills and qualifications do not meet the requirements to begin a Master’s degree.

DepEd opens application for 2014 student employment


The Department of Education (DepEd), through the Office of the Undersecretary for Regional Operations, has opened the application for the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) 2014.

SPES is an annual summer employment program that encourages students to make their vacation productive by working during summer thereby earning extra which they can use during regular school days. The program is spearheaded by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and supported by other government agencies. It aims to immerse the youth in the government and hone their sense of leadership and public service. 
Qualifications to be accepted as a SPES Trainee are the following: (1) Students/out-of-school youth who are at least 18 years old but not more than 25 years old; (2) He/she must be enrolled this school year (in-school) or if not, must have intention to enroll next school year (out-of-school); (3) the combined annual net income of both parents must not exceed Php 143,000; and (4) applicants must possess office skills with priority given to those with computer-related skills.
The following requirements must be accomplished for the SPES application: (1) SPES Application Form (Download Official SPES Application Form from http://tinyurl.com/DepEdSPES2014); (2) Birth Certificate / Baptismal Certificate (Certified True Copy / NSO);  (2) Income tax returns of both parents. If non-filers of ITR, they must bring an affidavit duly certified by the BIR that the annual net income of both parents does not exceed Php. 143,000 or a Barangay Certification as to the economic status of his/her family; (3) College Students: Recent grades and school registration preferably in the second semester; and (4) for the Out-of-School Youth (OSY), provide Grades available before dropping out of school or a Certificate of Indigence issued by the Barangay where the OSY resides.
SPES 2014 Trainees will be employed for 30 (thirty) working days under the supervision of SPES 2014 Secretariat in the Department of Education – Central Office.
The application period is from March 10-12, 2014 from 9:00 AM – 6:00 PMMonday – Saturday. Submission of document may be thru email via scanned documents (zip file) with your Name and Date of Submission to  youthformation@deped.gov.ph. You may also send your certified true copy of documents enclosed in a brown envelope with your Name and Date of Submission.

Educational Trends in Pakistan

In Pakistan, education sector has emerged in the recent years as the most promising business area. It has lately attracted the attention of masses from every stratum of society. Witnessing the prospects, people have come to the realization that education is the easiest means of earning—not necessarily confined in the hands of potential investors. It is why we cannot make even a vague distinction between true educationists and businessmen today. The concept of service in education appears no longer a valid idea. The engraving of Lord Macaulay’s “controlled education” on the face of Subcontinent could never literally be undone when it comes to Pakistan. In fact, our neighboring countries of India and Bangladesh have uplifted their educational standard to a healthy extent from the strands of Macaulay Doctrine. However, Pakistan could not prove lucky enough throughout its history to redeem its people.

The structure of education in the present history of Pakistan raises some serious questions. As we have two well-defined and well-described categories in our educational structure, public sector and private sector, the past performance of both requires to be critiqued in order to determine the healthy as well as unhealthy trends in the system. The imposition of English as the only medium of learning for Pakistanis can be justified on various grounds so much so it can be criticized with equal potential. The fundamental question is, however, related to the raison d’etre of Urdu in the wake of the Anglicizing-experiment of our education. Do we really need Urdu’s presence in our education or it is mere dust in the public eye? Private sector had already ignored Urdu in order to reap the commercial prospects of English as, allegedly, the best medium of learning. Now even the public sector has found the solution of our educational problem in replacing Urdu medium with that of English. It is here where the slave-mentality of our bourgeois society can be seen at its worst. The false impression of rapid success in life by dint of English has, to our depravity, developed into a devoutly held belief. If English were the only channel of development and modernization, China, Japan and Russia would not have been blessed with modern riches through the use of their own languages.

Another such problem is that of ‘unique identity’. In the thrill of intense exposition mania, much akin to the breaking-news mania of electronic media, every private educational institution, particularly schools, attempts to set up its distinct appearance. The foremost thing that falls prey to such a negative approach is the uniformity of student-stratum. For instance, uniform is made different from others in every possible way; syllabus is not kept identical with other schools’ syllabi; students are given such a mental treatment as to make them offensive towards the others; so on and so forth.

The noble profession of teaching has turned into an easy-to-abuse, least attractive profession in today’s Pakistan. Generally, only such individuals like to serve as teachers who are good for nothing. Individuals with better caliber and skill prefer to drive on other avenues of economic life. Moreover, teachers are not well-paid, particularly, in the private sector, though the situation of public sector is not encouraging either. Can such a mindset with inherent drawbacks introduce healthy trends in Pakistan’s extant education system and can it really cultivate a crop of inventive and free-thinking minds in such depravity? Certainly not. The whole ingenuity, in fact, gets badly affected in this type of environment.

We assume in our illusive perception that, by increasing the study hours and providing tutoring, we are educating our children in Western lines. However, this erroneous perception is immediately out when we take even a cursory glance into the Western education model. Schools and colleges have five working days a week in the West; and students are relieved with two holidays on the weekend. Furthermore, study hours at primary and secondary education levels hardly match our work routine. We far surpass them in our study labor, but with extremely poor results. Unfortunately, this notion has somehow found root in our society that we are doing a great service to our children by overburdening them with educational stuff and imprisoning them into the systematic clumps of a 10 to 14-hour study a day. Schools offering morning-till-evening teaching and coaching services are not only doing a handsome business, but they are also boasting an ever-increasing number of students enrolled every term.


In such objective circumstances of unhealthy educational atmosphere, the hurdles for Pakistani students are manifold. Such hurdles can be classed under three broad headings up until the secondary school. Thus, the problems our students face are: (i) non-native medium of learning, (ii) unskilled teaching, and (iii) mind-racking study burden of time and labor. Is there a solution to these problems? Indeed there is a solution to every problem; but, as it is taking us so long to fix the problems, we do not have it probably. Nay, putting it more appropriately, we do not have a solution, for we do not want one, and one must not forget in this current scenario that ‘where there is a will, there is a way’.

PU outs results of BA, BSc supplementary exams

According to a press release issued on Wednesday by BISE Lahore, admission date for class nine now has been extended from May 25 to May 31.
