Applying for a student visa from outside the UK

This page explains how you can apply to come to the UK as a student under Tier 4 (General) of the points-based system.
Before you apply, you should read:

  • the Can you apply? pages to find out whether you meet the requirements and will score enough points; and
  • the Documents required pages to find out which documents you should provide with your application.
Depending on the country where you live, you may need to make your application online or using application form VAF9. To find out which method you should use, see 'More information' below.
All applicants must also complete and submit the relevant version of Appendix 8 of the form.
You can download application form VAF9, the Appendix and the guidance notes from the right side of this page.
The date of your application must be no more than 6 months after the date when your Tier 4 sponsor assigned your confirmation of acceptance for studies to you.
There are particular application requirements if you are currently in the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.
As part of your application, you will need to enrol your fingerprints and facial image (known as 'biometric information') at a visa application centre.
Select your country in our country finder to find out:
  • how to apply in your country (including how to apply online);
  • the location of our visa application centres;
  • how long we generally take to process visa applications; and
  • how your documents will be returned to you.
If your application is successful, you can find information about what will happen at the border (including customs requirements) in the Customs and travel information section.

UK visa requirements

A visa is a certificate (sometimes referred to as ‘Entry Clearance’) which gives you permission to enter the UK.
StudentsThe visa is put into your passport or travel document by an Entry Clearance Officer at a British mission overseas.
If you are travelling to the UK to be a student, you may need to apply for a visa to enter the UK.

Check your category

Immigration requirements for the UK are determined by your nationality and whether you are:
  1. an EU/EEA/Swiss national or
  2. a Non EU/EEA/Swiss national

Advice for EU/EEA/Swiss Nationals

If your passport is issued by a country in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, you can enter the UK freely - you do not need a visa. This includes dual nationals (people with two or more nationalities) who use their EEA/Swiss passport to enter the UK.
Your EEA/Swiss family members can also join you. Further information is available on the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) website:

Advice for Non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals

Any other nationality will have to consider what visa type they will need and how to apply for it.
There are two categories of nationalities for UK immigration purposes: visa nationals and non-visa nationals.
What visa options are available to you and how you apply, depends on which one of these you are, what course you are studying and how long your course is for.
Firstly, find out whether you are a visa national or non-visa national, by checking the “visa national” list for the UK: Visa national list on the UKBA website
Next, refer to the information below which explains your options:

My country is on the list
You are a visa national:

You must obtain your visa before you leave your home country.
If you intend to travel to the UK to enrol on a course which lasts 6 months or more, you must get a Tier 4 (General) student visa before travelling to the UK.
If your course of studies is less than 6 months, you must either get a student visitor or Tier 4 (General) student visa.
If your course contains a work based learning (paid or unpaid), regardless of the length of the course, you must get a Tier 4 General student visa.
My country is not on the list
You are a non-visa national:

If you intend to travel to the UK to enrol on a course which lasts 6 months or more, you must get a Tier 4 (General) student visa before you leave your home country.
If your course is less than 6 months, you can apply on entry to the UK as a student visitor.
If your course contains a work based learning (paid or unpaid), regardless of the length of the course, you must get a Tier 4 General student visa.

New policy for UK study visa

KARACHI - The United Kingdom has announced a new visa policy for students seeking admission to educational institutions in UK.

As per the new policy, announced by UK Regional Manager for Visas and Immigration Mandy Ivemy, it would take three weeks to process a study visa application. Ivemy offered some ‘top tips’ to students thinking about applying for a UK student visa at a news conference here.

She said the UK and Pakistan shared a long history and had strong culture and family connections. There were over 1.4 million journeys between the UK and Pakistan each year. UK Visas and Immigration considers applications for permission to enter the United Kingdom through our visa services around the world. “We apply the same Immigration Rules in every country, and charge the same visa application fees, which are set in our Parliament,” she pointed out.

Ivemy said the UK home secretary announced that the Home Office would considerably increase the number of interviews in the 2013/14 financial year. She added that “we aim to interview over 100,000 visa applicants globally in 2013/14 financial year”. She said in 2012, UK Visas and Immigration issued 11,000 visas out of 16,000 student applications received from Pakistanis.

She warned against submission of fake documents, saying students rejected in previous years were because of the submission of fake documents. “Those found with fake documents would be banned from visiting the UK for up to ten years,” she said. All the information is available on the website of UK Visas and Immigration. This information includes a list of approved educational institutions.

According to Ivemy, one of the requirements for a UK student visa is for a certain sum must be on the bank account for 28 days prior to submission of a visa application. The rules are strictly enforced. If the funding has only been in place for 26 days, the application would be refused.

Some applicants use visa agents to help apply for a visa. Many of these agents offer good advice and are helpful for certain individuals. But all of the information one needs is also on the website, free of charge.
Ivemy said all Pakistani student visa applicants would be interviewed by an officer based in the UK, through videoconference, at the visa application centre when they lodge their applications. In addition, applicants may be invited for a further interview at the British High Commission to check whether they qualify for visas.
