Full-Time MBA Admission Criteria

Full-Time MBA Admission Criteria

Academic record

The Broad Graduate School of Management considers each applicant’s transcript in an undergraduate academic program. We require students to have completed a four-year undergraduate degree.
Special attention is given to the last two years of the applicant’s undergraduate career. The average GPA for the final two years in an undergraduate program is 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. We also consider graduate-level work but do not allow transfers from other MBA programs or candidates who already have an MBA or an MBA equivalent from another institution.
We do not accept 3 year international bachelors degrees (your degree needs to be a 4 year bachelors degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelors degree).
Note: If institution(s) chooses to send transcript electronically, please have sent directly to Michigan State University’s Central Admission Office through a transcript service such as AVOW or eScrip-Safe.

Resume

One copy of a current resume is required and should detail:
  • Professional experiences
  • Academic credentials and related accomplishments
  • Pertinent biographical data
The preferred resume format is a maximum of one page.

Standardized Test Score (GMAT or GRE)

All applicants must take either the GMAT or the GRE in order to apply to the program. While we do not have an official minimum score, our average GMAT score is about 655. A GMAT or GRE score alone does not guarantee or deny admission to the program.

Work experience

We strongly recommend a minimum of two years of full-time work experience after a candidate has earned an undergraduate degree. The average admitted student has 4 years of work experience.
The quality of work experience is closely scrutinized, with an emphasis on:
  • Professional career progression
  • Teamwork
  • Leadership experience
  • Quantifiable business results
The Broad MBA program occasionally will consider applicants with nontraditional full-time work experience prior to or during their undergraduate program.

Accomplishments

Different types of accomplishments can enhance the competitiveness of an applicant, including:
  • Work-related or professional awards and accomplishments
  • Scholastic awards, accomplishments, and publications
  • Community service work
  • Youth development and mentoring

Personal essays

Three personal essays are required, which are evaluated on their written structure and flow. The personal essays determine whether a candidate is a good fit for the curricular strengths of the program and the team-intensive environment.

Letters of recommendation

We require two letters of recommendation. We highly recommend both the letters of recommendation to come from a professional, work-related reference-preferably a supervisor. We prefer letters that attest to the candidate’s ability to work within and lead teams as well as to contribute significantly to a professional business environment.

Personal interview

Once past the initial screening process, applicants will be contacted for a personal interview by the admissions staff. During the interview, the candidate will be assessed on:
  • Attitude
  • Professionalism
  • Maturity
  • Ability to work well with people
  • Perceived fit with the MBA program
All candidates admitted to the program must complete the MSU Full-Time MBA Evaluative Interview.

International applicants

International applicants must meet all of the above requirements. In addition, we ask international applicants to provide a score from any of the following testing agencies-
  • TOEFL
  • IELTS
  • PTE
