Schools in the once wild west have grown into their own as they top our lists of best colleges in 2013. Not only was our top college, Stanford University, from the west, but also does this year’s runner up, Pomona College, hail from the pacific shores. Moving from the privates into the state school realm,University of California, Berkeley dethrones the long reigning University of Virginia for the best public (non service academy) school in the Nation.
American higher education is shifting west, away from the northeastern Ivies as many the top schools are now found in The Golden State. California Schools California Technical Institute, University of California, Los Angeles, Harvey Mudd College and the University of Southern California join the aforementioned schools in the top 10 in the west, all finishing in the top 10% of our overall list. California is not the only strong state in the west, as Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Utah are all represented in this 25 member “West is Best” club.
