Stanford University Ranks No. 1 On Forbes' 6th Annual Ranking Of America's Top Colleges -- Measuring Student Satisfaction And Post-Graduate Success

Top Stories From Europe: Business, Tech & LeadershipNew York, NY (July 24, 2013) — Stanford University tops Forbes’ 2013 rankings of America’s Top Colleges. The 6th annual rankings, calculated exclusively for Forbes by the Center for College Affordability & Productivity (CCAP), are featured in the August 12, 2013 issue of Forbes magazine, and online at www.forbes.com/top-colleges.
Stanford edged Princeton out of first place into the No. 3 spot on this year’s rankings, which focus on Student Satisfaction (22.5%), Post-Graduate Success (37.5%), Student Debt (17.5%), Graduation Rate (11.25%) and Nationally Competitive Awards (11.25%).  Pomona College moved up to No. 2 from ninth place last year, followed by Princeton University (No. 3), Yale University (No.

Some colleges will do anything to improve their ranking, including lying about data provided to the Education Department and other groups. Within the last four years these schools – Bucknell University, Claremont McKenna College, Emory University and Iona College – each lied to the Federal Government about the quality of their student bodies (Schools of Deception, p. 92).
Colleges At Risk (p. 84) addresses colleges’ financial health, introducing Forbes’ new Financial Grades, which measure the fiscal soundness of more than 900 four-year, private, not-for-profit schools with more than 500 students.  Of the 925 schools rated, almost half (436) were graded C; 128 got A’s. (Behind the Grades, p. 88).  Forbes also explores a creative end run around the “kiddie tax” imposed by Congress in 1986, throwing the investment income of youngsters into their parents’ higher income bracket. This year Forbes.com unveils a new, interactive college screener, “Find Your Top Colleges.” This tool matches users GPAs, SAT/ACTs and budget with our 650 top-rated schools.  Users can filter for school size, region of the country, setting and best-in-class retention and graduation rates.  The top 300 colleges are listed in the August 12, 2013 issue.
